Perch – The Canal 9A Overview

First Impressions

Walking into Perch – The Canal 9A, you immediately sense this isn’t your typical Seattle hotel. The four-star property sits in Fremont — you know, that quirky neighborhood with the troll under the bridge — and honestly, the location choice feels deliberate rather than accidental. There’s something refreshingly unpretentious about the whole setup, like they picked this spot because it actually makes sense for exploring the city, not just because it looked good on paper.

The Fremont Advantage

Here’s what I love about staying in Fremont — you’re close enough to everything that matters but far enough from the tourist chaos of Pike Place Market. The hotel’s location puts you within easy reach of the ship canal (hence the name, I’m guessing), and you can actually walk to some genuinely good local spots without fighting crowds. Couples seem to get this particularly well, which makes sense because there’s something inherently romantic about discovering a neighborhood that feels more like where locals actually hang out. The area has this laid-back vibe that’s hard to find in more central Seattle locations.

The Space Itself

The rooms strike that sweet spot between modern comfort and not trying too hard to impress. I mean, you’re not going to find over-the-top amenities here, but everything you actually need is thoughtfully done. The design feels clean without being sterile — sort of like someone’s really well-organized friend decorated their guest room, if that friend happened to have excellent taste. What really works is how the space feels genuinely restful, which honestly can be rare in a city hotel.

Getting Around

One thing that surprised me was how well-connected this area actually is. Sure, you’re not right downtown, but that ends up being a feature rather than a bug. You can get to the main Seattle attractions without much hassle, but when you come back at the end of the day, you’re returning to a neighborhood that has its own character. There’s something satisfying about walking back from dinner at a local spot rather than navigating through hotel row. The recent guest ratings for location (sitting at 8.8) start to make perfect sense once you spend a day or two here.

Why Guests Love It

What keeps coming up in conversations with other travelers is how the hotel feels like a discovery rather than just a place to sleep. The four-star rating reflects the quality without the stuffiness that sometimes comes with more upscale properties. Couples particularly seem drawn to the combination of comfort and authenticity — it’s refined enough for a special trip but relaxed enough that you don’t feel like you’re performing being on vacation. The whole Fremont location thing really works if you want to experience Seattle like someone who actually lives here, rather than just hitting the obvious tourist spots and calling it a day.

Reviews of Perch – The Canal 9A

  • Erin from United States – 8 March 2025 (4/10)

    The bed was comfortable. Clean.

What could be improved: Construction going on outside. Cold water shower. Near a school -(necessitating a background check for sex offenders? ) the surcharges inflate the price from under 100$ a night to 300$ a night. and it’s why i never go with Airbnb. This home was made just for this purpose of making revenue for some entity and I don’t like how it impacts the community.

  • Jonathan from United States – 29 October 2024 (8/10)

    Clean and convenient

What could be improved: Lots of stairs not necessarily apparent from listing and uncomfortable couch. Neither was a real problem at all though

  • Abby from United States – 7 March 2024 (8/10)

Super cozy and clean! They literally have everything you could possibly need

What could be improved: There was construction going on the street a lot but that’s nothing that can be helped.
